History

The song is about a man in denial about the effect the end of a relationship with the title character has had on him. Sparked by waking up the morning after a one night stand, the man engages in behavior he knows his ex would look down upon to prove that the break-up has had little impact on him. This painfully transparent front reveals the man is trying to get back at his ex as a means of coping. The song implies that the man still deeply misses Julianne. Her beauty is beyond words.

In its use of sound effects, the song recalls the early career of Billy Joel, to whom Folds has often been compared.

Additional versions

A live version of the song, recorded November 26, 1996, at the former LA2 nightclub in London, appears on the 1998 compilation and rarities album Naked Baby Photos.[4]
